K-4th Assignment #2

Welcome back to your second week of online art class! This week we will be exploring something you may or may not have seen outside: Oh my goodness... BUGS!

I'm not sure if you've noticed, but the weather has become quite nice the last few days. With the nice weather... comes... BUGS! Agh, there are so many! For this week's art lesson I would like you to create your own bug. I have directions for two variations for this lesson. The first lesson will be for a Play-Doh sculpture and the second lesson is for a pencil drawing. You may choose which you would like to create.

Play-Doh Bug

Materials:

-Play-Doh

1. Pick out the colors you would like for your bug. You may use a variety of techniques we've learned in class to create the body of your bug such as a sphere (ball) or coil (snake).

2. Add details to your bug. Think about all the different characteristics your bug might have (eyes, dots, stripes, wings, legs, etc).

4. Take a picture and send it to me - I would love to see your adorable insects! Unless they're gross... then maybe just show them to someone at your house.

Pencil Drawing Bug

Materials:

-Paper

-Pencil

Alternate Materials:

-Sharpie

-Crayons

-Watercolors

1. You will be creating a completely unique bug. First I want you to think about the body of the bug. Is it long, skinny, short, wide, smooth, hairy, etc? There are so many options!

2. Now that you have drawn the outline of your bug, think about the larger details such as the legs, wings, antennae, etc.

3. AGH! You still need more details! Yes, I know... I know, I keep pestering you for details and for you to take your time but honestly it will make your work so much more captivating.

4. Ok, now that all the details have been drawn... You're done!

If you are interested in adding extra details and have the materials at home then please explore the following:

5. What about the background? Is your insect just flying off into space? I thought not... So, lets think about the environment.

- Is your insect hidden in the woods? On a tree? In the field?

- Is there anything in the sky? Moon, sun, clouds, rain, rainbows, etc?

6. You may have extra materials at home and want to add color to your drawing.

You can explore shading with some of the materials listed below:

-Colored Pencils

-Graphite Pencils

-Paint (Watercolor or Tempra)

7. Take a picture and send it to me - I would love to see your adorable insects! Unless they're gross... then maybe just show them to someone at your house.
